I always have my grub boot floppy handy

      # mke2fs /dev/fd0
      # mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt
      # grub-install --root-directory=/mnt fd0
      # umount /mnt

otherwise stick the harddisk on another machine and fsck it 
etc to see if it's OK.
