WRT54G does support other fw (DD-WRT, Alchemy, etc).

As far as a cheaper solution, you might consider an Buffalo Airstation
or some other hardware that supports the OpenWRT firmware (there are a
lot out there). Last I checked the GL was on the pricey side.
