When you check and uncheck the make private box you are changing the
contents of two files:  /etc/vmware/vm-list and
/etc/vmware/vm-list-private.  I believe the
/etc/vmware/vm-list-private specifies the userids that are allowed to
access the vm.  Hacking that file might have fixed the problem (or it
may have rendered the vm completely unusable).
