Man, I know just what you mean. When I added that bootfast USE flag to 
my /etc/make.conf and then did an emerge world, whoa, my custom boot 
screen background flew by so fast my boss couldn't even tell it was Tux 
taking a bath with Tub Girl. Awesome!
