Thanks for all the help.  Now i know just why I can't use my cheapie printer with Linux.  I have an expensive printer hooked up to another computer so I can look that up on the list, otherwise I know what to look for now when I shop for a new printer.  Those cartridges don't last wrong, right again!  Lexmark was no help at all.  I'm grateful as a newbie to have somewhere to ask after I've tried to help myself.
