[TriLUG] OT: Hijacked Browser Typos

Hi Folks,

I recently switched to earthlink cable broadband. It's an improvement
over my old DSL service, but there is one annoyance so far. Whenever I
type a URL into my browser too quickly and make a typo, my browser jumps
off to an earthlink page that tells me "you idiot, we can't find that
web page".

I used to be able to go up to the URL field on the browser and fix the
typo. Now it gets replaced with
"http://earthlink-help.com/?AddInType=Bdns&Version=1.1.4el&FailureMode=1&ParticipantID=xj6e3468k634hy3945zg3zkhfn7zfgf6&ClientLocation=us&FailedURI=http%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.cokm%2F"

instantly. So I have to type it in again, and if I fudge the last
letter a second time I start wanting to throw things.

Not only is this annoying, it also means that if one of my typos turns
out to be a fabulously marketable web address, EL will be able to slap a
squatter on it before I can blink.

Anyone know of a way to reassert control over my typos? Do I need to
start using someone else's DNS or proxy service?

Thanks muchly,

Scott C.
