Trinity (http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?wpid=57&front_id=12) or Knoppix might be useful. I'm not sure what you're wanting to benchmark, however. All of these will do RAM testing, processor speed, hard drive tests, etc.

kevin,
going by what my boss said (i haven't drilled down to look), this program
has a bootable version, so that it does not have to run on the os its self.
any suggestions? free is better, but it needs to be just as stable as any of
the commercial products.
