I think they are probably just responding to customer demands about the
server back-end.  Until this announcement, you used to have to maintain
a Windows server just for Quickbooks even if all of your existing server
structure was UNIX/Linux.  There wasn't much of a good reason to make it
Windows-only, unlike the GUI client which is a much different beast to port.

It's low hanging fruit, and it makes it easier for IT guys to stomach a
request from the bean counters to get QBP installed.  Before this, they
could very well have lost customers due to the excessive costs involved
with their original server requirements.
