Well, unless it's broken, which is certainly possible, we have supported
SMTP AUTH ever since the mail server was set up. So, the answer
would be yes. If you log into the mail server with a username and password,
we have in the past relayed mail for our users. Generally, this has meant
relaying directly from a mail client like Thunderbird, KMail or Pine, and not
relaying from Postfix, though. So, the bandwidth involved is rather minimal
(especially since it's text and everyone doesn't e-mail continuously. We've
never had a problem with a user sending large amounts of e-mail and if we
did I imagine that person would find their account suddenly yanked until
they could explain.
So, I wouldn't necessarily recommend configuring postfix to relay through
TriLUG, but configuring your mail client to relay through TriLUG has been
ok for quite a while now.
