Option 1) will get you exactly nothing in the way of redundancy -- it's
still the same set of fragile spinning platters. I don't imagine you'll
get anything in the way of read performance, and I'm sure that write
performance will be miserable as the drive attempts to write two places
at once. So yes, you are on crack :)
2) is a better option for a RAID 1 mirror. Read performance will be
better (I would make sure to put them on different buses however), and
if one drive fails your data will be on the other.
