I just got an e-mail to download the beta of Joost, and it's pretty awesome.
Given the lack of any compelling content on cable TV, and the VHS(or higher)-quality of streaming video, I'd give cable TV programming another 5 years at most (IPTV anyone?).
There is currently no version available for Linux, but I tend to think it will be available eventually as there is an entire section for "Other Platforms" on their forum. There is a Mac version, but this competes directly with Apple TV so I'm sure Apple is not to keen on it. In fact, this makes a very compelling argument for purchasing a Mac Mini for a few hundred dollars more than an Apple TV, and simply doing away with cable TV altogether. The Mac Mini already has a remote and a slick UI that works very well with a HDTV; and now with Joost, it would be reasonable to never watch cable TV again.
It says I can invite others to try it out so if anyone is interested, just send me an e-mail off-list. There are some complaints on the forum about invites not working, but I haven't tried it yet.
