[TriLUG] IM server solution for MS Messenger clients

I'm thinking about implementing a local IM system for use just in our 
department. I'd really like to avoid having to have users install software 
on their systems, though. Microsoft Messenger is part of our standard build, 
so I was hoping to find an open source IM server that would be compatible 
with Microsoft's client.

Unfortunately, i'm not sure if such a beast exists. Anyone have experience 
doing something similar, say with Jabber?
