I ran into the same issue on a client machine.  knoppix wouldn't mount
it, said it had shut down uncleanly and needed a chkdsk /r.

I made a windows live CD with bart PE and was able to clean up the
drive enough for knoppix to rsync the stuff off.

Or, if you're more patient than I, you can copy it off from the PE livecd.
