[TriLUG] NTFS corrupted partition recovery????

A few to try:
Linux-based:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ (boots to a live linux environment)
http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?wpid=1&front_id=12 (this is probably your best bet and has the most capable bag of tricks)

Windows-based
http://www.ubcd4win.com/ (boots to a bartPE environment-basically scaled-down XP, but requires a valid copy of XP to load system files from and takes time to build the iso so put on bottom of the list)

If you think the drive may be failing, it is advisable to put it in a plastic ziploc storage bag and place in the freezer for at least 20 minutes before attempting data recovery. The platters will shrink a fraction making them spin more reliably. This has worked for me in the past, though YMMV.

Good luck!

Kevin

Subject: [TriLUG] NTFS corrupted partition recovery????

All,

A large NTFS file partition ( 84gb ) has become corrupted. Spinrite sees
it as an NTFS or HPFS (??) partition and gladly processes it, but no
change. Ubuntu sees it as an NTFS or HPFS ( ?? ), but will not mount it.
Says it is corrupted to use chkdsk to recover. Chkdisk says it is a RAW
file and will not work on it. Winxp says it needs formatting.

I have found an application called "Getdataback" that appears to recover
the files, but to save the files they want 80 dollars for registration.
Anyone know of an open source application that will recover the files
and/or partition structure???
