I used to drive a Lotus Freelance but I couldn't find parts for it
either.

Write a program with the language of your choice to open the file and
write out only the characters that are less than 128 (i.e. only true
ASCII not extended ASCII).   Could refine to not include many of the
characters below 32.    This will recover his text, but formatting
will be completely lost.
