IRC == Internet Relay Chat.  In English: chatrooms, akin to AIM or MSN
Messenger.  In fact, their predecessor.  To use, download Pidgin (or
$IM_CLIENT) and look through the menus to add an account with the IRC
protocol.

Server: irc.freenode.net
Nick or screen name: <anything you want, but try to be unique>

Once, connected, look through the menus to join a chat, and put in
'#trilug'.  That should get you started.
