I bought my laptop about a week before I was going to Malaysia,
a place where I would definitely need analog modem support.  I
never had time for figure out how to use the built-in WinModem
(apparently, some people have figured it out).  So instead, I
just popped in a run-of-the-mill PCMCIA modem.  It worked great,
and I never concerned myself with the built-in modem.

Sometimes, it's better to just work AROUND the problem.
