this is my check, however I don't know which parts you don't 
have working. You need

o hardware to be recognised by the kernel (it will be 
a /dev/ttyS?) - try cat'ing the device to see which ones are 
alive. Check dmesg, /var/log/ for clues if you can't find 
it.

o link /dev/modem to the device. Try dialing with minicom.
