Normally, you will get two password prompts, like this:

porter at pilot:~$ ssh alan at kimono
alan at home.alanporter.com's password:
alan at kimono's password:
Linux kimono 2.6.22-14 Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007 i686
alan at kimono:~$


But if you have your public key installed on the gateway,
you'll only see a single password prompt from the target.
In that case, it's as if the gateway were invisible!
