Do you happen to know what audio chipset this is?  The Intel HDA stuff 
is known
to frequently have this problem with Linux.  I had some trouble getting 
the headphone
jack to work with my new Toshiba, it ultimately took a kernel upgrade to 
make it work
in my case, but other people have had success fiddling with different 
parameters passed
to the kernel module.
