[TriLUG] Ubuntu 7.10 Install Trouble

My desktop recently died (some power supply problem) and I'm trying to
install Ubuntu 7.10 on my HP dv6000 Vista laptop.  I have had many problems
with trying to do this and it also won't even let XP Pro install on it.  I
do no remember the errors I got, but it was a good number of them.  I do
however know that it would stop mid-way on the loading screen, the one with
the Ubuntu logo and go black.  My laptop is an:

HP dv6000
AMD Turion 64bit 2.0 ghz
1gb RAM
broadcom 43xx wifi driver/card
HP quickplay buttons (those play, pause, volume, etc buttons on the keyoard)

Does anyone know how I would be able to get Ubuntu 7.10 or the latest ubuntu
on this?  I can come to the next meeting of TriLUG if that's needed.
