Joining the AD Domain will let you have integrated authentication,
without slinging
_as many _credentials around the network in the clear. I believe that
you will also be able to leverage the AD groups, nested etc, to grant
access to the file services on your SAMBA box.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS in a Windows AD network and am able to successfully join the domain using Likewise Open, as well as browse network shares by computer name using Samba and Winbind. You'll have to install winbind through apt as it's not installed by default for some reason.

Reboot the system after installing nautilus-share (permissions won't work until you do). The shared folder will be visible on the Windows Workgroup as a (Samba, Ubuntu) share.
