I've got a similar system using an SD + USB drive [1] (I got it for my
camera which has since died) using the Ultimate Boot CD [2]. It fits
wonderfully in my wallet. It includes lots of boot floppy images for
specific hard disks, etc. You can also add your own images extremely
easily (just copy and paste the image and add a line to the custom.lst
file).
I chose UBCD over a live distro because (for me) it has been more
useful for failing hard drives (I added SpinRite) and emergency
repartitioning. The only part where I've found this to be somewhat
lacking is in NTFS support, though I'm sure a small linux boot image
with ntfs-3g could be put together and added to the disk though to
complete it. The other option would be to get a 2GB drive and put a
copy of KNOPPIX on there with UBCD (I'm pretty positive the menu
system can chainload right into a CD image). Actually, now that I
think about it, I've figured out next weekends project :D Hope that helps!
