So, that was one of the most frustrating Linux experiences I've had in
a while. First, to build the software, you need a full GNOME
development environment, which for me consisted of around 70 packages.
Then, once I'd built it, I had to track down some extra Python
dependencies using the Fedora crash reports. In the end, I still
couldn't get it to work consistently (both the panel applet and the
AWN applets): sometimes it just crashed, other times it completely
froze up my X server. However, in reading about Gimmie and Mayanna (a
more current fork of Gimmie) and seeing how many Ubuntu users are
loving it, I think the problem may be a combination of GNOME 2.22 and
the new X server in F9. I did find some good build directions for
Ubuntu on the Mayanna Google Code site though [1,2]. For now, I think
I'm going to call this too unstable for me, however you may have
better luck on Ubuntu. Let me know how it goes!

Michael

Additional build notes:
I downloaded the latest version of the python-GData library from
their Google code page, instead of using the suggested version 1.12-1.
I also did all of my testing using the Gimmie and Mayanna trunks.
