You probably already know the answer to this one.
For the basic residential service the DSL modem assigns a dynamic IP to 
the router/host.

Yes, a static IP is extra.

A little more information. The modem they supplied me was a Zyzel 660. 
There is documentation on these modems at Embarq site. I also found 
every thing I needed to know on the Zyzel site. You know, just in case I 
ever had a problem with the line I could back things up with a little 
techno babble of my own.
