Depending on how the computer failed, it could be a trivial
operation.

For example, if the motherboard or the battery/power system or
the LCD died, then simply remove the hard disk and use a USB-HD
enclosure to plug the old drive into another system.  Then copy
the files off.

If the disk died, then your options are a bit more expensive.
