I'll tell you, I just switched this weekend from VNC over SSH to
NoMachine's NX.  ZOMG!!  The difference was astounding.  Truly
remarkable.  NX is like sitting at the machine.  In fact, I was so happy
with it I changed the desktop environment from XFCE to Gnome, just to
make it easier on myself since I'm much more familiar with Gnome and
speed is no longer a problem.

Really, do yourself a favor and check out NX.
http://www.nomachine.com/download.php  There are some totally GPL
versions, too, but I haven't tried them.

I didn't try it earlier because I didn't believe it was so dramatically
better than VNC.  I was wrong.
