Indeed!  I found in /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf this line:
dc_other_hostnames='zanshin

I guess that means that exim is the default MTA on Ubuntu 8.10.  I
edited the exim.conf.conf file and did a sudo dpkg-reconfigure
exim4-config so hopefully that fixes things.
