I rode a 10 speed bicycle from Chicago to Oklahoma City in autumn 1972.
Part 
of that trip was highway 169 between Kansas City Kansas on the 
Kansas/Missouri border and Coffeyville Kansas on the Kansas/Oklahoma
border. 
It was a pretty fast trip through Kansas (2 days) because it was so
flat, but 
man, it was boring, boring boring.

I stayed my first night in a public park in Garnett, Kansas, right next
to a 
cattlemen's school were the students walked around in brand new, never
been 
dirtied, jeans, boots, hats etc. It was wierd. IIRC it snowed on me in 
Coffeyville or the next night (half way between Coffeyville and Tulsa).
