I was involved in a discussion regarding burglary between several Durham
neighborhood associations and the Durham police about a year ago. The
unanimous opinion of the police in the conversation was that burglars
are idiots and are usually committing crimes without much preparation.
According to the police:
* Most burglaries in Durham were committed with objects found at the
scene, like shovels and rocks, meaning that burglars don't come prepared.
* Burglars with wire snips and alarm system schematics only occur in movies.
* Signs warning of a burglar alarm and actual alarms are equally
effective in preventing a burglary.
* Lighting, locking doors and windows, and not placing valuables in
plain sight are the most effective means to prevent a burglary.
That's what the DPD had to say, anyway. When we bought our house, which
is in a mildly sketchy neighborhood, I bought alarm signs and stickers
on ebay and was pretty comfortable with it. One of the houses on our
street was broken into a couple of times so I got a real alarm. The
burglar turned out to be the 12 year old girl across the street whom
can't be prosecuted, apparently.
