[TriLUG] OT: DTV transition and new ATSC frequencies

I suspect that it all comes down to $$ or the lack of it. From what I hear the reason that UNC is doing all those extra fund raising shows is that they have a budget problem.
I find I am having problems with the TV stations across the board.
I find that I can scan, and pick up a number of stations, but not all of them.
If I move my rabbit ears around, it has a circular component and an amp included in the total, I get a different set of stations.
But when viewing a station I get intermittent drop out. I suspect that part of the problem is that the different stations are in a least three different directions from my location, which is in the dmz between Cary, Apex and Holly Springs.
One shock is that I have a problem with channel 22 which has it transmitter about 2-3 miles from here.
Watching the power meter on the TV shows that the incoming signal can vary by 50% over a short period of time.
Anyone have good advice for a good antenna that will pick up signals from more than one direction? Any thought on lighting protection?
Thanks len

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I would have figured UNC-TV would
have been putting up that digital antenna months ago... You know, when
the original switchover was scheduled. Sounds like someone screwed the
pooch at UNC-TV.
