Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this.  My stack was
increasing exponentially in early April.

Gnome-terminal and konsole only partially emulate xterm, so this won't
work with them, but if it's truly xterm then the attached function
should be able to help you out.  It's tested, so I know it works,
although I haven't yet incorporated it into my bash_* scripts.  (I blame
the perfectionist in me.)  No, not as handy as Shift+KP+, but functional.

I watched my friend at CCC do it on his Mac too, before he gave it to
me, although I'm not sure if it was the default Terminal app or xterm as
through the X11 install.

Tangentially, you'll also note the color references in the file.  He
uses them to dynamically change the background of the entire window when
he's a different user or ssh'd to various machines.
