My mistake - I meant AST.  Didn't Microsoft know who AST was?  Seems unlikely that they are that incompetent.  (On the other hand, they are no very good at software, maybe that extends to legal stuff too).

OIN wasn't invited to the sale, but instead, another company (AST)
bought the patents, and then sold them to OIN.  Presumably
pre-arranged.
