[TriLUG] mysql root pw with non-interactive lamp server install?

Hmm, I wonder if I'm running into a new release thing with ubuntu
karmic.  If I do 'mysql -u root -p' and then respond with a simple
<CR>, a ''<CR>, or ' '<CR>  I still get the error described below.

Or is there some better way to enter a blank password?

I have by the way tried the same variants on the command line
immediately after the '-p' and in the '--password=<pw>' form of argv.
