[TriLUG] Disk subsystem recommendations

I am looking into improving my disk subsystem. I currently run three
80GB Sata II drives in a software RAID-0. I am running Fedora 11 and use
VMWare workstation 6.5 extensively. I was thinking that I might get
better overall performance if I run the disks as three individual
volumes. I would have the F11 OS on one, and two VMs with direct
physical access each to their own hard drive. I would run any other VMs
off of a USB2 external hard drive knowing that their performance would
be limited. I create 4GB iso files and test unattended installs on a
regular basis.

Any suggestions? I am open to purchasing external hardware. I have
looked at the various options from g-technology.com as well as
glyphtech.com. Any additional hardware that I buy needs to be less than
$2k.
