If your home phone usage is low, and you want to reduce your fixed
monthly expenses, then you should investigate the smaller VOIP
providers.
I am using Callcentric.com which has a fixed cost of about $4/mo and
various per minute rates for incoming and outgoing calls. My monthly
phone bill is under $10. Voice mail is free and is available via the
phone and/or email as mp3.
I use an unlocked Linksys PAP2-NA from ebay for ~$35, connected to my
ordinary panasonic cordless phones.
I recommend pinging the VOIP providers server to make sure the
latencies are low before signing up with them:
ping ping.callcentric.com
PING ping.callcentric.com (204.11.192.10) 56(84) bytes of data.
