I started an mke2fs with the following command line:

mke2fs -c -m 1 -j -v -I 128 -T ext3 /dev/sdc1

(I know -j and -T ext3 are redundant, i figured it couldn't hurt. -c
sucks up gobs of time, but I like to be careful). Anyway, mke2fs reports
that it will make a little over 15 million inodes (compared to approx.
19 million for the fs I want to back up in which only about 350K or so
are used according to 'df -i').

I let people know how it turns out.
