[TriLUG] Remote X question

I know this has been discussed here before, I just can't find it.

I sometimes need to access linux X apps at work from home using linux on 
both ends.  I tried just ssh -X and this is very painfully slow (30 
seconds per mouse click) especially when I try to use eclipse remotely.

In the far past I had used a VNC server on linux.

I remember some better options being discussed.  What other packages are 
people using for running X apps remotely.
