I would recommend slitaz (32mb iso that is _fairly_ full-featured and has some nice programs in the repos with more constantly being added). Their package management system (Tazpkg) reminds me of dpkg.
I see that others have recommended LXDE so if you like Ubuntu, you could go with Lubuntu.

Mephis or antix works very well for old laptops. I run this for a couple of old laptop.
