[TriLUG] OT: Earthlink and ISPs

It is true that the old Clearwire is largely the same company running
Clear with major investors being Intel, Sprint, Comcast, TWC, Google
and Bright House Networks. Sprint uses Clear for their 4G service.

Today, Clear uses WiMAX @2500 - 2700MHz. This is one of the big
reasons it isn't that great indoors in many locations. Building
material and terrain between you and tower will largely dictate your
speed/signal strength. I think this is one of the things that will
make Verizon's LTE services appealing when they are deployed, I
believe they are going to be running LTE at 700MHz which will
penetrate buildings even better than the lowest frequencies used for
CDMA/GSM (850-900MHz and 1900MHz).

Regarding TWC - they are, for the most part, rock solid for over 10
years on both residential and business class in the two homes where
I've had service. I think a lot of that is directly attributable to
the "newness" of the infrastructure. Both homes were in new
construction. Fresh coax cable plant makes a world of difference.
