Cheap guy that I am, I got most of my computers at the dump. My wife's
Linux box, for instance, is a Compaq Pentium from about 13 years ago.
Folks take a virusasiated machine and drop it at the "convenience
center" for recycling. I take it home, and presto, Ubuntu!

The dump has now stopped private recycling of computers, because they
have a contract with some outfit that mines them for gold, or something.
So if I want more ultra-cheap ones I'll have to look elsewhere.

My wife's Christmas would probably be complete if her computer was only
5 or 8 years old. (Or if I got her a tractor.) She complains about the
speed occasionally, and it's not always because some remote web server
is unresponsive.

Anybody getting a new machine for Christmas and wants the old one to go
to a good home? We are responsible, and feed our computers nothing but
100% recycled electrons.
