While it's true the heat will keep the unit relatively dry, critters such as mice may set up shop nearby (to stay warm), soil the equipment and gnaw on whatever tastes good - possibly including your wiring. I've had this happen with a largish cabinet of servers and network gear, and fortunately just had a clean-up job afterwards (no damage).
You could put it in a plastic NEMA box with small, caulked wire holes, or a ventilated cabinet for something larger that needs airflow. Some moisture isn't much to worry about, so long as air is moving. I once put an Aironet bridge in a mostly-sealed 12x12x4 NEMA box, along with a packet or two of moisture absorber. Worked great the 3 years or so it was in outdoor service. On removal it was a little dusty but otherwise was as new.

A wise and frugal government, ... which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government. - Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801.
