As for books,
I like "A Practical Guide To The Unix System" Third Edition (includes 
Linux) By Mark Sobell. This will help get familiar with Unix in general, 
not just linux. I tell folks, this book will get you to "power user" 
without having to know how to spell "Unix" first. :)

I agree, Fedora or CentOS would be where I'd suggest to start. Granted, 
I prefer System V feel. My old Solaris days.
