If he may be able to scale the speed down through DD-WRT.  Also, he may be
able to enable logging and automatically SCP the log to his desktop every 5
minutes.

In DD-WRT v24 sp2, clock speed adjusting is in Administration > Management
(default) > Overclocking.

If it is heat, you can attach a 45mm fan.  There's some good how-tos on
where to feed the power and grounds.
