Just to poke my head in here, I really hope you're not just making 
copies of the mysql data files as a backup. That will break in all kinds 
of unfun ways.

For mysql backups you really need a tool like xtrabackup 
(http://www.percona.com/docs/wiki/percona-xtrabackup:start)
