Igor speaks the truth.

The Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator does exactly what you describe.
It installs the base distribution to the USB drive, and then creates
an overlay file that contains all of your "diffs". You can apt-get
install packages, add files to your home directory, even delete
files and packages from the system.

Later, if you remove this one "diff" file, you are back at the starting
point, with a fresh image.

I think Knoppix was the first distro to do this, but you had to
specify a special "cheat code" at the bootup prompt in order for
Knoppix to find your "diff" overlay file.
