[TriLUG] Best O/S for a Linux Router/Firewall?

I have been using LRP (Linux Router Project) for some time and I am very
happy
with it: http://leaf.sourceforge.net/bering-uclibc/

It has shorewall which is well supported by the community and the main
developer.

It can run off really old legacy pc so you don't need to spend money on
hardware.
5 years ago when I built one, I picked up an old pc for $10 and had the lrp
setup
that I still use at my home. It is command line driven  and can run off a
floppy disk
or a cdrom/dvd drive and no need to have a hard drive.

Last I used, they had linux 2.4 version. Latest version seems to support 2.6
and probably has support for flash drives.
