Hmm. I see.
In the section "Mail and Internet" in
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html#apps
pine is mentioned as _not_ having UTF-8 support. However
alpine does, but you have to set alpine up and set your term
to display UTF-8.
