Though you are asking for books, I thought I'd throw a movie out there:
Revolution OS (http://www.revolution-os.com/) is a pretty accessible,
though somewhat dated look at how GNU and Linux got started. It's a series
of interviews with prominent OSS and FSF figures including RMS, Linus and
Eric Raymond.
