[TriLUG] Anyone having luck backing up to Blu-Ray?

Give Nero a try, as it's fully functional for 30 days.
I had exactly the same problems and also noted K3B would not burn Blu-Ray at the max speed the disc/burner were capable of. Nero just worked, so I happily paid the $20.
